Texaco: The Early Years

Lockport township high school class 1891
Thanks to Board Member Bonnie Carlson for getting some information on the 1891 picture of Lockport High School we printed in the June 2009 newsletter. Bonnie is also a member of the Will Grundy Genealogical Society and remembered that in their WGGS Quarterly of Summer 2001, Vol. XIX No. 4 page 86, they had listed alumni of the High School. There are more children in the picture than listed as alumni (graduates), but some may have dropped out prior to graduation. CLASS 1891: Healy H. Alexander, Halbert H. Gaines, Josephine Wallace, Samuel C. Fiddyment, Carrie M. Tilsy, Lewis T. Lotz, William P. Jones, Nellie Dow Orrell, Herbert M. Johnson. CLASS 1892: Jennie A. Walter, Carrie Lynd Phelps, Adella Savage Paddock, Bessie Shields Walter, Mary Damm Cornell. CLASS 1893: None listed. Class 1894: Sara Parr.

This picture was taken on June 14 1912 in the Knights of Columbus Hall (note the picture of Christopher Columbus on the wall) Lockport Illinois. It is thought that the hall was located on 9th Street between State and Hamilton Streets in what is now Uncle Richie’s Tavern. The occasion was the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the ordination as a priest of Rev. James J. McGovern, D. D. The picture was recently found by Dan Tully in a barn on the Grace Dunn farm on Rt. 7. Jo Ann Drake has the original picture. Dr. McGovern is the priest almost in the middle of the picture.
